You know they call Blackhawks’ young-gun, Jonathan Toews, “Captain Serious” because he’s always serious? Imagine that. One of Toews’ heroes is Steve Yzerman, which is why he wears No. 19. I don’t think Toews would ever kiss Patrick Kane, or another teammate, while being shown on the ‘Kiss Cam’ — cab drivers have been punched for less — but Toews should probably know going into the Stanley Cup Finals, you know, in case he wants to start kissing his teammates and not focus as much on winning, that one of his biggest heroes has kissed a fellow teammate:
The Red Wings were seated on the visitors’ bench at Nationwide Arena, focused on a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. To keep fans occupied during a break in action, the song “This Kiss” was played as cameras panned fans in the stands following the advice.
Until, that is, a camera zoomed in on Martin Lapointe. And Brendan Shanahan, who blushed and smiled, but didn’t move. And then suddenly, there was Steve Yzerman, wrapping his arms around Lapointe and pecking him on the cheek.
That scene, dating from April 2001, encapsulates the lesser-known Yzerman, the one overshadowed by the man who became a legend.
Honestly, I wish I could give Stevie Y a big wet one for goodbye, but that probably won’t happen because of D4L’s restraining order. Luckily, it only applies in the state of Michigan. By the way, I’ll be gone today looking for condos in Tampa Bay…
