In a bizarre twist to the Tigers season, and the biggest uniform change since LeBron James announced he’d like to wear No. 6 next season, Gerald Laird has switched his jersey number from 8 to 12, beat reporter Jason Beck informs us. Laird has been on a mission to improve his hitting since spring training, but unfortunately, he has failed mercilessly. He’s 16-101 (.158) through 31 games and his defense has also been subpar, so perhaps the switch to a higher number will coincide with higher hit totals and more baserunners caught stealing.
There are rumors that the uniform change was made to hide his identity from enemies/authorities in Arizona, but we think that’s bogus since he does a pretty good job hiding in the Tigers lineup every day.
I know in the NBA players have to file papers to officially change their uniform number and the league can turn it down due to jersey sales concerns (or in LeBron’s case, instantly accept it because of the influx of buyers for his new jersey number). This is just a hunch, but the transition of Laird’s new number will go pretty smoothly.
