The re-programming of Max Scherzer in Toledo proved to be successful, as he came back clicking on all cylinders and without any viruses. Scherzer struck out 14 of the 17 outs he recorded, tying a Comerica Park record for strikeouts set by Jeremy Bonderman in 2004. Per Jason Beck, it’s the first time since 1933 a big leaguer has struck out 14 batters without making it through the 6th inning. Scherzer was lifted in the 6th inning when he walked and hit consecutive batters and his pitch count reached 113. I didn’t know robots had pitch counts.
The offense took care of the rest for the Tigers, banging out 15 hits and scoring 10 runs. This year’s MVP, Miguel Cabrera, had four hits and knocked home four runs (48), three of which came on his 14th home run of the still-young season. Surprisingly, the bottom of the lineup chipped in today, going 5-9 with three runs and a pair of RBIs. Brandon Inge had three hits and a solo homer, while No. 12 Gerald Laird improved his BA to .333 with a pair of hits. He was so happy about the second hit, he got picked off first base while basking in all its glory. Ryan Raburn was 0-3 (.177) and tried to karate kick a fly ball that ruined Max Scherzer’s no-hitter.
Joel Zumaya picked up an odd save, his first of the season, as he entered the game in a save situation and got the final outs. My fantasy team is thankful for that. Detroit looks to split this four game series with a win tomorrow. Justin Verlander takes the bump and will probably throw a no-no.
