Is it just me or has this been the longest week ever?
- First, a quick programming note: I’ll be pulling myself away from the World Cup action for a hot second to participate in a Bloguin-wide NBA mock draft. My picks will be posted here and I’ll be sure to link the other picks (separate from your daily links) as they happen. Keep on the lookout for the first pick at A Stern Warning.
- Switzerland provided the first big upset of the World Cup, shocking heavily-favored Spain 1-0 yesterday. The Spaniards dominated everywhere but the scoreboard, similar to last year’s 2-1 loss to the U.S.
- Bad news for the Boston Celtics: Kendrick Perkins will not play in tonight’s Game 7 against the Lakers. Even worse for the Celtics, L.A.’s Andrew Bynum is good to go.
- The Pac 10 looks like it will go for a round dozen. The conference invited the University of Utah to join, making a conference championship game much more likely for the soon-to-be 12-team league (because there’s no way Utah can turn this down, right?)
- I know English girls are ugly (not really) but damn.
- Of all the bribes and other attempts to lure this year’s crop of NBA free agents, this is easily the best we’ve seen so far. Miami-Dade County will officially be called Miami-Wade County for the first week of July to entice D-Wade to stay in southern Florida.
- Todd Bertuzzi signed a 2-year deal with the Red Wings yesterday at a cap hit of about $1.9 million per year. He got a slight raise, but I’m happy to see it’s still less than $2 million per year. Hopefully Bertuzzi can replicate last year’s production.
- Tennessee’s Chris Johnson is not happy whatsoever about his current contract situation and went on a Twitter rant to make his point. As much as everyone thinks Cop Speed deserves a new deal, it’s probably not going to happen this year.
- With Nebraska joining the Big Ten, the entire focus has (rightly) been on the football side of things. UM Hoops has all the info you need on Nebraska’s basketball program. Cliff notes version: they’re definitely no Michigan State.
Today’s random video and highlight after the jump…
