You know, because he got hit in the head with a screaming, life-endangering line drive and the Tigers lost their sixth, season endangering game in a row on July 19, right?
Not quite.
Yes, there are causes for major concerns, but give it a rest, people. It’s July 19 and the Tigers are 2.5 games out of first place. They were seven games up in September last year and lost the division. I’ll start to freak out and push panic buttons and talk about jumping into traffic in a couple months, maybe, but not now, not with 71 games remaining.
What might hurt the Tigers more than the actual loss tonight is the injury to Brandon Inge, who will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. He was starting to pick up the slack at the plate (.317/.406/.845 in his last 40 games), but he’s a replaceable piece in the lineup. Team morale might take a hit, but an Inge injury is something the team could actually rally around, too.
Basically, all I’m saying is: relax, F. Then again, I took a line drive to the head last summer, like Nippert did tonight, so maybe my brain is broke’d.
(For what it’s worth, I’m still willing to do some MLB betting and stick to my pre-season prediction that the Tigers would win the World Series. It’s a rocky season thus far, but it’s all about who gets hot at the right time. I still believe).
