Clearly, the picture on our sidebar helped. Alex Avila was named the starting catcher for the American League in next week’s All-Star game, headlining a group of four Tigers that will be on the AL roster. Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera were both voted onto the team by the players, while Jose Valverde was selected by AL manager Ron Washington (probably after a line or two).
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the second best catcher in the American League still needs your help. Victor Martinez is on the vote-in ballot, along with Shane Victorino of the Philadelphia Phillies. Just like two years ago, the two best sports towns in the country (yeah, I said it) are teaming up once again. Vote for Victor Martinez and Shane Victorino to represent their respective leagues in the 2011 All-Star game.
Thankfully, it looks like the Tigers will avoid another embarrassing showing in the Home Run Derby.
