The Detroit Tigers started off their campaign for a fifth-straight AL Central division crown in style, as David Price was one out short of throwing a complete game shutout, striking out five in 8 2/3 scoreless innings.
Price gave up his first hit in the fifth inning, a single by Kennys Vargas, as he cruised to his first win of the season. Price snapped Justin Verlander’s seven-year streak of openers.
The offense showed some pop, with home runs by J.D. Martinez and Alex Avila off Phil Hughes, while Yoenis Cespedes doubled, tripled and scored twice in his Detroit debut. After an off day on Tuesday, the Tigers will put Anibal Sanchez on Wednesday, followed by Shane Greene on Thursday.
Which takes the Tigers to their first weekend series of the season against the Cleveland Indians, who are one of the few teams pegged to challenge the Tigers for their division title streak. Detroit plays in Cleveland for three games, April 10th, 11th and 12th and will face the 2014 AL Cy Young Award winner, Corey Kluber, in the final matchup.

After two road series against Cleveland and the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Tigers will enjoy a stretch of 10 consecutive home games. Detroit went 11-8 against the Indians last season.
