There has been a lot of chatter in recent weeks over the MLB All-Star voting process. Last week it was announced that eight of the nine starting spots for the American League All-Stars belonged to members of the Kansas City Royals, making the event much less of an All-Star game compared to any other in the game’s history.
In the latest All-Star voting results, Detroit Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera leapt over Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer to take over the starting spot, for now. Cabrera has a total of 9.3 million votes and counting, with Hosmer trailing by 1.3 million votes.
When the two players are compared side-by-side with stats, there’s really no argument from Hosmer to be starting over Cabrera. the future Hall-of-Famer leads the American League in batting average, RBI, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
Miguel Cabrera | Avg: .350 | HR: 15 | RBI: 52 | OBP: .456 | SLG: .593
Eric Hosmer | Avg: .294 | HR: 8 | RBI: 38 | OBP: .362 | SLG: .460
Cabrera is looking for his third straight starting All-Star bid, with two of his teammate still in the running to earn a spot before the July 2 deadline. Jose Iglesias is second behind the Royals’ Alcides Escobar, and Yoenis Cespedes is fourth in outfielders (three, of course, start) behind the Royals’ Alex Gordon.
If one, or multiple Tigers players, earn starting spots, fans can enjoy an amazing All-Star Weekend at the Great American Ballpark by using Hipmunk.com to reserve flights to Cincinnati. Cespedes will most likely be defending his Home Run Derby title, which he’s won two years in a row now, the night before the game, so don’t miss out on any of the weekend’s activities by booking hotels in Cincinnati through Hipmunk as well. Tickets to the MLB All-Star Game have an average ticket price of $1,073.62, with a get-in price of $333 on the secondary market, according to TiqIQ.com.
Still, seven Royals players are leading the voting, including Salvador Perez, Omar Infante, Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar, Lorenzo Cain, Alex Gordon and Kendrys Morales.
