On the night where they welcomed home Stanley Cup champion Vincent Lecavalier, Steven Stamkos tied the game with just 5.5 seconds left and rookie forward Brayden Point scored on his first NHL shootout attempt to give the Tampa Bay Lightning a 4-3 win vs. the Florida Panthers at Amalie Arena last night.
In a fast paced first period, the goalies were dominant. Ben Bishop (10 saves) and James Reimer (8 saves) stopped everything thrown at them.
The Bolts had a much better start than on Saturday but failed to score
With Vincent Trocheck in the box, Florida’s Colton Sceviour scored off an a bad Ondrej Palat turnover. Sceviour beat Bishop high with a bullet of a shot to open the scoring at 2:38 of the second period,
Tampa Bay’s Alex Killorn scored his third of the season from Nikita Kucheron to tie the game at 6:18. Kucherov set Killorn up with a beautiful behind the net pass for a one- timer.
Ondrej Palat jumped on a Steven Stamkos rebound near the crease and deposited it behind Reimer to give the Bolts a 2-1 lead at 16:21. Stamkos and Jonathan Drouin garnered the assists, giving each of them points in the first three games.
Trocheck tied the game for the Panthers at 5:26 of the third period as Bishop lost track of the bouncing puck which made its way out front to Trocheck for his second of the year.
With 4:08 to go, the Panthers’ Michael Matheson beat Ben Bishop cleanly with a one-timer for his first NHL goal.
With 5.5 seconds left, Steven Stamkos one-timed the puck from a terrible angle for most players. But this is no regular player. Stamkos scored a goal scorers goal past Reimer to send the game to overtime.
Stamkos’ second goal of the season was assisted by Victor Hedman and Valtteri Filppula.
There was no score in the overtime and the game went to a shootout where rookie Brayden Point beat James Reimer to give the Lightning a 4-3 win. This after Jonathan Drouin scored and Vincent Trocheck scored on a disputed goal after he whiffed on the shot but continued his forward motion and slid the puck into the open net. Quite obviously, Bishop gave up on the play after the whiff.
