Rodrigues’ Whitney Wildcats achieved a mark of 7-5, 4-1 in league, losing to CIF Dvision III Sectional Champ Del Oro in the quarterfinals. Rodrigues shows awesome potential in the video. CIF Division III play includes traditional powerhouses like Mater Dei and Oaks Christian, and at the Elite 11 Camp at Palo Alto, he went up against some of the best schoolboy quarterbacks in the country. He plays TALL, just a dominating presence on the field. In the highlights, he’s a power runner in the mold of Cam Newton (hate to use that example, but it fits) rather than a darting speedster like Dennis Dixon.
The 6-3, 215-lb quarterback is a workhorse in the Whitney offense, with as many as 31 rushing attempts in a game (keep in mind high schools play 12-minute quarters), eclipsing the 200-yard mark twice. He makes a variety of throws well and can zip the ball into the seams of zone coverage. Awesome also to consider that these are junior highlights; with his camp appearances and summer work, he’ll make a big leap forward as a senior.
Another thing to consider: at 17 years old, he is 6-3, 215. He’s likely to be a chiseled 230 by the time he’s spent two years with Jim Radcliffe and his staff.
Looking at the stats, the pass percentage numbers are a little low, but that’s not atypical for high school football. The passing game requires a high degree of coordination, both in line blocking and pass-and-catch, so 51% accuracy is a fair number. Nine interceptions, and a 1-for-9 performance in the quarterfinal against Del Oro, are experiences the Whitney senior will use to make himself better. He’ll also want to improve on his ball security.
But this is all Duck fans need know: there are over 250,000 senior football players in the country, and Jake Rodrigues is the young man Chip Kelly wants to sign to play quarterback for the Oregon Ducks. Whether he’s four-star, top 100, or eighteenth in the country, that’s the fact that counts. Because Chip Kelly is the smartest, most well-organized football coach in the country.
Jake Rodrigues will have every opportunity to develop into a phenomenal football player.
