Cottrell is another athletic smasher who has the Ducks among his favorites. He has verbal offers from Oregon, USC, Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Boston College, Colorado, Mississippi State, Wake Forest and others, a list that grows every time he attends a camp, clinic, or walks across the 40 with his shirt off.
Just last week he worked at USC’s Rising Stars Camp, impressing with his first step and agility, but the Trojans passed on giving him an offer, only because they’re so scholarship-poor this season with the 10-scholarship penalty.
He plays outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense at Plano West, a school with a great tradition that suffered a winless season last year. Cottrell didn’t disappoint, however. He’s started since his sophomore year, and in his highlight film what stands out is his speed and quickness to the ball. He knifes in, speed rushes, throws down, a high-volume tackler who pursues and breaks down ball carriers with fantastic effectiveness and enthusiasm. Fans will love how hard he plays, the relentlessness, the refusal to be blocked.
Cotrell is also a standout basketball player who works hard around the basket, and throws shot and discus in the spring. Nick Aliotti and Don Pellum love players like this, guys who run and hit. He’d be a good fit in the Oregon defense. playing alongside Anthony Wallace, Rodney Hardrick and Rahim Cassell in a season or two.
