In July The Duck Stops Here ran a recruiting story on an undersized Florida high school running back named Fabian Moreau, “Why recruiting services are both necessary and evil.” Moreau had sent a polite email with his high school highlight tape and measurables. “My dream is to be a Duck,” Moreau wrote.
Listed at 6-0, 170 lbs., these were Fabian’s statistics as a junior at Western High:
ATT YDS AVG TDS REC. YDS AVG TDS
rushing 106 316 3.0 2 receiving 19 209 11.0 0
Moreau worked hard over the summer, attending several camps and improving his game. In the season’s first game he exploded. “The season is going good so far we had our first game last Friday and won 41-13. I had 8 touches for 266 yards and 4 Tds,” he said.
Colleges are starting to notice, and the senior has picked up several offers from around the country. Here are the highlights from his opening game (Fabian wears #5):
His story reminds me of an old proverb: “Happy are those who dream dreams, and are ready to pay the price to make them come true.” Or, as Coach Kelly says, “no one ever rises to low expectations.” Who knows? Maybe there’s a spot for him on the Duck roster in 2012.
