Oregon recruiting: prospect Gehrig Dieter is si.com’s National High School Player of the Week

Last year at this time? The website si.com’s nationally-featured high school player was a phenom from Crenshaw High named De’Anthony Thomas.

From writer Stephen Boyle’s story:

The 6-3, 200-pounder has excelled both in the classroom and on the gridiron, maintaining a 3.2 GPA as well as becoming a highly touted recruit. He doesn’t smoke or drink, and is a tireless worker, taking extra classes in hopes of enrolling early at college. His statistics are astounding: 75 receptions, 1,988 yards and 24 touchdowns.

“I think any skilled athlete should work as hard as they can,” he said.

Check out the accompanying video, which starts with Dieter throwing a key block downfield, and features his coach, Atwon Jones, praising his focus and work ethic. Both Gehrig’s parents are police officers, and he’s a directed, dialed-in guy, who faces the camera and speaks modestly.

But someone has to do something about that Auburn Tiger sweatshirt.
