Ohio State Recruiting Outlook – Quarterbacks

tate

The Buckeyes have been graced with great quarterback play since Urban Meyer took over the team in 2012. From Braxton Miller to J.T. Barrett to Cardale Jones and back to Barrett, the Buckeyes have gone 56-4 under Meyer due to suburb quarterback play.

Let’s take a look at recruiting at the quarterback position for the next couple of years and see how the Buckeyes look.

After this season there is thought that J.T. Barrett might be departing Columbus for the NFL — leaving Ohio State with a lot of inexperience at the position. If he goes the projected starter would probably be Joey Burrow, however if he stays the rest of these guys get another year to watch and learn from one of Ohio State’s all-time greats. Stephen Collier got injured before the season and has played sparingly over the past two years, and Dwayne Haskins is all but a certainty to redshirt this season.

The 2017 depth chart could look a lot different than it does below if Barrett does decide to depart. At one time the Buckeyes had two quarterbacks committed for the 2017 class in Danny Clark and Tate Martell.

Clark decided that the best option for him was to de-commit and find another school where he would have a better chance at success. As of this writing he has not decided, but plans on announcing on October 22nd.

Martell, who was committed at one point to Washington and then Texas A&M, seems to have finally settled on Ohio State and should be the only quarterback taken in the class of 2017.

The Buckeyes have already locked up the #1 dual-threat quarterback in the class of 2018 in Emory Jones out of Franklin, Georgia.

Jones committed shortly after visiting for Friday Night Lights this past July and packs a big arm as well as the ability to run. He hurt his shoulder a couple of weeks ago, but should only miss 2-3 weeks of his junior season.

The Buckeyes currently have zero offers out to any 2019 quarterbacks, as judging by the Danny Clark saga, they might wait until kids hit their junior year before sending out offers.

Then again I could be totally off base and they could offer one tomorrow.

The quarterback room at Ohio State looks to be in good hands once J.T. departs for greener pastures. Next year we will probably see Joey Burrow at quarterback, but it wouldn’t surprise me at all to see Haskins give him a run for his money during spring and fall camp.

Martell will be enrolling early so don’t count him out, but I would imagine he will sit next year and learn the system and go through a year of Mickey Marotti’s strength and conditioning program.

Injuries can always change things at the drop of a hat like we saw with the 2014 Buckeyes, and having multiple options at the most important position on offense is necessary.

After next year, your guess is as good as mine on who takes the reigns, does Joey Burrow maintain his hold? Does Haskins unseat him early and hold onto the job? Does Martell impress enough to take the job outright? Does Emory Jones come in and blow everyone away and start as a freshman?

These are some story lines to watch as the Buckeyes hit 2018 and beyond.

What we know right now is that the way Ohio State is recruiting top athletes to come play in Columbus, we should not see a drop-off in quarterback play after J.T. Barrett leaves.
