Ducks in the NFL: Ngata, Dickson fall victim to Manning magic

Peyton Manning turned in one of the most exceptional performances of a Hall of Fame career in Denver’s 49-27 home win over the Super Bowl Champion Ravens Thursday night.

In the opening game of the NFL season Manning tossed a record-tying seven touchdown passes, including two to former Portland State tight end Julius Thomas. Thomas is a former basketball player who tried out for football as a senior after completing his eligibility in hoops. In all he had five catches for 110 yards, part of a 27-42, 462-yard passing clinic by his quarterback.

Former Ducks Ed Dickson and Haloti Ngata started for the Ravens. Dickson caught just one pass for 13 yards, despite being targeted five times. Eight-year veteran Ngata had four tackles in the game, including a tackle for loss.

Sunday is a full slate of NFL games, with 28 former Ducks remaining on league rosters after last Saturday’s cutdown day. Chip Kelly, Jeff Maehl, Casey Matthews and Patrick Chung debut on Monday night against Washington.
