Oregon football recruiting: Tony James commits despite monsoon

Tony James, the speedy all-purpose back from Gainesville, Florida, committed to Oregon on Sunday morning, according to ESPN recruiting analyst Derek Tyson and Justin Hopkins of Duck Territory.

James has to really be sold on the Ducks. He committed after making his official visit the night of some of the worst weather in the school’s football history, a steady downpour of miserable swirling rain that’d discourage many prospects from warm weather states.

A 4-star prospect, James is 5-9, 175, with a top 100 meter time of 10.52. He’s shifty and elusive in the open field, a good student with a 3.0 G.P.A. A four-star commit with offers from Florida, Auburn, Ohio State, Florida State, Miami and over a dozen others, he coveted an Oregon offer from the beginning of his recruiting.

His commitment gives the Ducks a big, powerful back with good speed in Royce Freeman, and a shifty, quick one in James. His highlight tapes can be found here.

James catches the ball well out of the backfield, and could be an excellent candidate for the versatile slot receiver/tailback/dynamic return man role that De’Anthony Thomas and Bralon Addison play now.
