Oregonian reporter Jason Quick notes that The Texas twosome is on pace to become the first pair of Ducks to go over 1,000 yards since Damon Griffin and Tony Hartley in 1998. They’re also in range of Bob Newland’s all-time Oregon season mark of 1,123 yards from 1970.
Scott Frost, Mariota and the receivers are quick to give credit to new receivers coach Matt Lubick, who has made the passing game more dynamic by teaching improved technique and more precise pass routes.
Huff practiced today and was seen after practice walking without a boot. The weekly two-deep has him returning kicks alongside Keanon Lowe, a strong indication he’s ready to go and De’Anthony Thomas may not be.
The Washington State secondary gave up 493 yards passing to Sean Mannion last week, and 4 tds. Brandin Cooks also had a big day for the Barkrats, 11 catches, 137 yards and 2 tds. Addison and Huff should find room.
Running back Byron Marshall has been steady and capable as the Ducks lead back this season with Thomas missing these last three games. He’s on pace for a thousand-yard season, 90 carries, 554 yards, 6.2 yards a carry, with 6 tds. His one-yard touchdown run to open the scoring against Washington last week was one of the most determined efforts you will ever see, keeping his legs driving in a mass of bodies, getting a nice wrasslin’ assist from Hamani Stevens, who tackled him into the end zone at the end of the play.
When will fans see Thomas Tyner run with instinct and confidence? So far the true freshman has done a credible job, with 47 carries for 261 yards, 5.6 a carry, 5 tds, but he seems to be picking his way, tentative at the second level. His 31-yard touchdown run against Virginia stands out as the one time he truly trusted his exceptional ability to cut and go. Tyner has the talent to be a legendary college football player.
Legendary truth teller Nick Aliotti says PAC-12 officials are horrible and don’t know how to call pass interference. Coach Nick’s outburst of candor may cost him a phone call from the league office, but he could be lobbying for some fairness on game day. He’s a crafty old salt, an Oregon treasure for his passion and devotion to his guys.
