The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have clinched a playoff spot, and Jeremiah Masoli has found a role with the team.
In a come-from-behind victory over former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith and the Montreal Alouettes, Masoli played a key role, tossing his first CFL touchdown pass and rushing 10 times for 61 yards in a 27-24 win at Guelph Alumni Stadium. (ticatsca.com photo).
Henry Burris starts for the Cats, but Masoli came in off the bench in the Wildcat formation, a surprise move the Ticats employed for the first time. Currently 9-8 and having clinched a playoff berth, they square off Saturday versus last-place Winnipeg, another chance for the former Duck Rose Bowl quarterback to see action. Round one of the playoffs start Sunday November 10th, a rematch with the Alouettes.
Masoli left Oregon in a cloud after arrests for a laptop theft and marijuana possession, resurrected his career at Ole Miss, spent a season with the Omaha Nighthawks of the UFL before catching on with Hamilton.
His success at Oregon should give Duck fans hope in contemplating the future without Marcus Mariota, given that the Quack Attack has achieve prolific numbers with Dennis Dixon, Masoli, and Darron Thomas operating the controls, none of whom have yet achieved much success as next-level quarterbacks.
The gutty, stumpy fireplug was an Autzen fan favorite when he ran the offense in 2008 and 2009, leading teams that finished 20-6, finishing 10th and 11th in the country.
