Sprint Cup drivers were back to Kansas in order to get that crucial win before the big wild card race next week at Talladega. Matt Kenseth picked up the pole for this race.
“Qualified really well, “said Matt Kenseth.
“Really good as temperatures heated up,” said Brad Keselowski.
Matt Kenseth started the race off leading laps and then at lap 27 it was caution time for debris on the track. Leaders pit and Matt Kenseth keeps the race lead. We get a short green flag run this time and Aric Almirola wrecks to bring out the caution at lap 36. We get another short green flag run and at lap 44 Jamie McMurray smacked the wall to bring out the next caution.
We finally get a new long green flag run with Matt Kenseth leading laps and around lap 83 it was the start of green flag pit stops. Martin Truex Jr. wound up not getting a full fuel load under his pit stop. As the pit stops cycled through Matt Kenseth was able to get the race lead back. At lap 115 Martin comes down pit road for service as Josh Wise smacked the wall to bring out the caution. The leaders pit and this helped put Martin back on the lead lap while Matt Kenseth kept the race lead off pit road.
Martin though still had trouble getting fuel in the car as was only three gallons short this time.
When the race restarted it was not long and Kevin Harvick took the race lead at lap 126. This was a new long green flag run and at lap 165 Martin Truex Jr. had to make his pit stop. Four laps later and Chase Elliott got the lead for the first time today. Around lap 174 it was green flag pit stop time, but Chase Elliott had to make a second pit stop to replace a bad tire. At lap 177 it was caution time as Kyle Larson smacked the wall.
When the race restarted Carl Edwards had the race lead. At lap 190 Denny Hamlin hits Brad Keselowski and wrecks him hard to bring out the caution. As the race continued Carl Edwards was leading more and more laps. At lap 221 it was caution time once more as Brad Keselowski smoked big time. The caution brought in the leaders with Austin Dillion taking two tires to win the race off pit road.
“I don’t want to points race,” said Brad Keselowski.
The race restarted with Carl Edwards easily getting the race lead. This was a short green flag run and with 34 laps left Regan Smith brings out the caution. Most of the cars on the lead lap pit. Fresh tires worked for Kyle Busch ad he quickly moved up to second. Kevin Harvick though was able to get the race lead. With 24 laps left Chase Elliott has more tire problems. Chase made it to pit road and did not bring out the caution. Five more laps go by and Carl Edwards was able to get back to second place. As the laps quickly went down Carl could do nothing to stop Kevin as he took the win at Kansas.
“These races are hard to win,” said Kevin Harvick. A special promotion was out for this week where the Bloomin Onion was free on Monday for any Kevin Harvick finish.
Joey Logano said his car was good on speed in the short runs.
“Had such a good car,’ said Chase Elliott.
“Track changed on us,” said Matt Kenseth.
