In the Metro, it’s really coming down to Washington and everyone else. Nobody is catching the Caps, but there is plenty of wiggle room below them in the standings. We can be pretty sure that the Rangers, Penguins and Islanders will make the playoffs, but with 5 points separating the three teams, it stands to reason that there will be movement in the standings within the next 8 games. Tonight, the Rangers take on the Penguins, in what may be a battle for home ice advantage, but frankly, if they drop to Wild Card position, that means a match with the Panthers, which may ultimately be a bit easier than playing one another again. We’ll revisit this one tomorrow. What happened last night?
SCOREBOARD
Buffalo 3, Winnipeg 2 – The Sabres have more points than the Jets this season. Let me know if you saw that coming.
Pittsburgh 7, Detroit 2 – The Penguins are coming around. Did they spend all their energy this weekend on this game, though?
Minnesota 4, Colorado 0 – Huge game with playoff implications. The implication is that Colorado won’t be playing in the playoffs.
Dallas 4, San Jose 2 – Dallas has obviously been good all year, but right now they seem indestructible.
Boston 3, Toronto 1 – This is a good win, and a lesson for the Maple Leaf youngsters that they still play for Toronto.
New York Rangers 5, Montreal 2 – So this is what sets up tonights games. The Penguins and Rangers abusing mopes.
Anaheim 4, Ottawa 3 (OT) – An overtime game 3 time zones away? Good conditioning for the Ducks. Don’t you look at Bruce Boudreau and think “Great conditioning?”
Florida 5, Tampa Bay 2 – Solid cross state game. Peculiar that it’s so important…
St. Louis 4, Washington 0 – The Caps give zero shits about the way the rest of the season plays out.
New York Islanders 4, Carolina 3 (OT) – The Isles are playing again tonight, which I’m sure is just what the doctor ordered.
Nashville 5, Columbus 1 – The Preds are almost becoming a super fun team.
Arizona 2, Philadelphia 1 – The Coyotes are the fun house mirrors of the NHL amusement park. All of their results look super weird.
Los Angeles 6, Edmonton 4 – The Kings struck oil… ha!
Chicago 4, Calgary 1 – The Flames were a playoff team last year, and nobody expected them to be there (correctly) this year. Sort of weird, right?
