With sports numbers, it’s all a matter of when you make them

Here's an interesting statistical comparison:

It's interesting because the numbers are nearly identical, but the perception was entirely different. Mariota's team lost in Palo Alto, and he fell completely out of the Heisman race, because he had "choked" in a big game. Winston's team won the National Championship, so he gets credit for a big comeback  (Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports).

Mariota fell completely out of the Heisman race after the Stanford loss and a subsequent loss to Arizona despite playing on one leg.

Proving once again that quarterbacks get way too much credit when they win, and too much blame when they lose.
