Takeaways, updates and soundbites from Media Day

Mark Helfrich today at Media Day: “I don’t think we’ve been this deep at receiver since I’ve been here.”

–There’s a decided difference between being short in numbers (like the Ducks are at linebacker and on the defensive line) and being short on experience, like the Ducks are at receiver. It’s a much different kind of thin. One is less resolvable than the other. Oregon has to get a little lucky at DL and LB and avoid a run of injuries. At wide receiver, they just need some very talented players (with a promising group to choose from) to adjust to a new level.

At linebacker, Danny Mattingly and Torrodney Prevot have to develop in a hurry. Tyson Coleman has to stay healthy and improve his consistency. Joe Walker could be improved in his second year.

Lubick doubled the production of Huff and Addison in his first year, and he had similar success at Duke. Defensive line and linebacker are where Oregon faces the most serious depth issues, in my mind. They need Talia, Balducci, Kamp, Daniel, Swain, Mattingly and Prevot to develop in a big way, preferably by September 6th. That’s asking a lot. The defensive front seven has to get a lot better at stopping the run for the Ducks to achieve those high expectations.

OLB Torrodney Prevot is up to about 230 pounds, he said, after being closer to 200 last season. Said the weight hasn’t affected his agility.

Marcus Mariota believes Bralon Addison’s ACL rehab is going amazingly well, could be back by MSU game: http://bit.ly/1APqM0q

UO LB Johnny Ragin III, a transfer from Cal, has filed a hardship appeal to be eligible this year.

Freshman Danny Mattingly isn’t much for words, but is for contact: “I just like to hit people.” He’s playing at MLB behind Hardrick, Walker.

Tyler Johnstone said he’s cleared to practice (knee injury in Alamo Bowl) but is trying to play smart and not push it early in camp.

Oregon wide receiver Bralon Addison said don’t count him out yet. He hopes to return this season is possible. @BralonAddison11

Helfrich on Thomas Tyner: “He needs to have a bit more confidence in what he’s doing.” Calls Tyner, Marshall “excellent all-purpose backs.”
