Hue Jackson doesn’t like losing, which is a problem—his Cleveland Browns are 0-7.
The Browns were in the final stages of getting walloped 31-17 by the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 7 when Jackson ripped off his headset and merely watched the game from the sidelines.
Folks noticed, of course, and asked him about it after the game, as captured by NFL.com’s Nick Shook:
“I don’t like losing, and I can get just like anybody else,” he said. “I can get disappointed and upset just like anybody else. Because I took them off, I knew exactly everything that was going on. I can hear. It wasn’t like I wasn’t involved in the game, but I did.”
Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com provided another quote:
“Yeah, I took them off,” he said. “I called the team out. Yeah, I was disappointed because I don’t want anybody running the ball like that on us. We’ve got to get some things squared away, but I take responsibility for it all. It’s not our players; we’ve got to fix some things and keep working on some things and we will.”
Frustrated with his defense that coughed up more than 550 yards of offense, Jackson ditched his means of communication with his quarterback.
The silent disappointment isn’t hard to understand. Jackson’s team has been awash with injuries all season and he’s now used six different quarterbacks. But the man was smart enough to know going into the job it would be a multi-year rebuild. Really, it’s almost impressive the Browns have played as many close games as they have this year.
That’s a testament to Jackson, even if he did ditch the headgear knowing full and well everyone would be on his case about it for the following week.
