Kelsey Mitchell did as Kelsey Mitchell does but her 27 points on the night wasn’t enough at Value City Arena on Monday night. South Carolina had a pair of transfers in Kaela Davis (Georgia Tech) and Alisha Gray (North Carolina) who poured in 37 and 24 points respectively as the Gamecocks star A’ja Wilson was in foul trouble all night and finished with 5 points.
The Buckeyes put four of their starters into double-figures as Stephanie Mavunga had 11 (9 rebounds), Shayla Cooper 15 (5 rebounds) and Sierra Calhoun 18 (6/7 FT). The Buckeyes shot well overall but fell victim to a late run almost single-handedly by Davis’ 7 points during a third quarter run that put them up by 8. The Buckeyes made it close a few times but couldn’t make up the difference of Davis and Gray.
The final score was 92-80.
The Buckeyes entertain Cleveland State at home on Wednesday.
Coach McGuff had this to say after the game
”Our defense wasn’t up to par. When you play a great team like South Carolina, if you’re not going to defend you’re not going to win.”
