Spurs news and notes: 76ers respect the Spurs, Duncan sings Bob Marley, and more

• The San Antonio Spurs will next face the Philadelphia 76ers on their Rodeo Road Trip and 76ers’ coach Doug Collins has nothing but respect for the Spurs:

• Against the Toronto Raptors last night, Tiago Splitter took a nasty fall on the court and fell right on his backside. But he says he feels pain everywhere but is OK.

• ESPN’s Michael Wilbon spoke on the Spurs’ 44-8 record. He defends the Spurs style of play against those who say the Spurs are boring, Tim Duncan’s shot at a fifth ring, and more.

• Express News’ Tim Griffin reports on a rare statistical feat the Spurs accomplished:

Four different Spurs had at least six assists in the game, a feat that hasn’t happened for the franchise in more than 18 seasons according to STATS LLC.

Hit the jump to read why teams should fear the Spurs, what music Tim Duncan sings to his children at night, how to win two free tickets to the Spurs-Oklahoma City Thunder game later this month and more.

• Earlier today, Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan resigned from his heading coaching duties which now makes Spurs’ coach Gregg Popovich the longest tenured coach with one team in the NBA. With Sloan’s resignation, former Spurs’ player Tyrone Corbin will take over as head coach of the Jazz.

• Fox Sports says it’s time to fear the Spurs and gives their top 10 reasons. Here is an excerpt:

10. At plus-7.12, San Antonio has the second-best point differential in the NBA. Over the past 20 seasons, the eventual champion has been ranked in the top two in this category 11 times. Should the leaders remain the same, that translates to a 55 percent chance of the Finals winner being either the Spurs or the Heat, who lead the league with a point differential of plus-7.92.

• First George Hill and now possibly IUPUI’s Alex Young might make the leap into the NBA:

“What helps Alex is a lot of NBA teams are saying, ‘How did we miss on George Hill? We’re not going to miss on this guy,’ ” Hunter said. “Alex is getting additional attention because of what George has done.”

Young leads IUPUI in scoring (20.0) and rebounding (6.9), but it’s his performance against marquee opponents that has attracted attention as much as his season-long success. (indystar.com)
