Many point to the overwhelming size advantage the Memphis Grizzles had over the San Antonio Spurs in their opening round series which led to Memphis winning the series in six games. As much as that was a huge factor in the series, Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins says his strategy all along was to take away the Spurs three point shooting:
“Our strategy against San Antonio was to take away the three.”
Sure enough, Memphis did just that shutting down the Spurs’ perimeter shooters such as Matt Bonner, and Richard Jefferson who shot well below their regular season averages.
Kind of troublesome for Spurs fans seeing how many shooters the Spurs surrounded themselves with only to see this emphasis on shooting come crumbling down in the playoffs and play a major part in their undoing.
