The Lightning stopped their four game losing streak with a fantastic effort against a very good Washington Capitals game at Amalie Arena tonight. Ben Bishop’s stellar play and an all around excellent team effort lead the Bolts to a 2-1 shootout win.
An end-to-end, scoreless first period was highlighted by the goaltenders. The Lightning’s Ben Bishop stopped 11 shots while Braden Holtby stopped all eight shots he faced.
The goaltender’s battle continued well into the second period. Alex Ovechkin was sent to the penalty box on a slashing penalty and the Lightning power play went to work. Victor Hedman set up Nikita Kucherov who sent a laser of a shot past Holtby at 12:38. A series of penalties left the Lightning shorthanded through the remainder of the second but the penalty kill unit was up for the task and held the lead.

The Lightning penalty kill had a misstep in the third period. With Braydon Coburn off for high sticking, Nicklas Backstrom scored on the power play at 6:24. It was eerily similar to Kucherov’s with Bishop screened in front. Regulation ended with the score tied 1-1 and 3-on-3 overtime ended scoreless.
Bishop’s strong performance continued in the shutout where he stopped all but an initial goal by Evgeny Kuznetsov. His teammates made sure to secure the win for their netminder. Brayden Point and Brian Boyle registered shootout goals to get the second point and end the team’s losing streak.
Bishop ended the night with 34 saves on 35 shots.
