Game Recap: ‘Canes Shutout Bolts 1-0 In OT

Cam Ward made 30 saves and Phillip Di Giuseppe scored with 3:34 remaining in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 1-0 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena last night.

The goal was the first of the season for Di Giuseppe, who beat Lightning goalie Ben Bishop with a wrist shot from the right circle. Bishop made 29 saves in the OT loss.

In the scoreless first period in Raleigh, the Bolts outshot the ‘Canes 12-10 and outhit Carolina 14-4.

The second period saw the Lightning go 0-3 on the power play as both teams were inept on offense, failing to score. Brayden Point and Brian Boyle led the way with three shots each.

Late in the third period, with a penalty on the ‘Canes already, Viktor Stalberg went off for high-sticking as the Bolts had 22 seconds of a 5-on-3 left. Noah Hanifin came out of the box giving Tampa Bay a 5 on 4 for 1:31, which the ‘Canes killed off.

That was it for the third period and overtime ensued as the Lightning got at least a point and play OT for second con game.

Phillip Di Giuseppe beat Bishop 1:36 into overtime for his first goal. Carolina wins the game 1-0 but the Bolts gain an important point.

Point and Boyle each had for shots while defenseman Victor Hedman led the team with five.

Jonathan Drouin missed tonight’s game with an undisclosed injury.

The Bolts host the Canucks on Thursday at 7:30 PM at beautiful Amalie Arena.
