Cam Newton benched for Derek Anderson, leads to laughable play

Carolina Panthers v Oakland Raiders

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera tried to send a message at the start of Sunday’s game against the Seahawks, and judging by the play that followed, he probably shouldn’t have.

Carolina was faced with a must-win spot, fighting for its playoff life, so who’d the team trot out there at quarterback to start the game?

Derek Anderson.

It went about as well as you’d have thought, too. Anderson threw a pass intended for running back Jonathan Stewart, that bounced off his hands and was picked off by Mike Morgan.

Here’s why Newton was benched to start the game.

The Panthers kicked a field goal to take an early 3-0 lead, which left many wondering why he would make that move in a must-win game, against a stout defense.
