Are you up late looking for the latest Cowboys nuggets on the web. I’ve got a couple of nice ones for this late night edition. So, what would you say if I said Wade Phillips probably won’t be here in 2010, well right now its probably safe to say fans aren’t quite looking forward to more camp cupcakes. The soft-spoken coach is working in the final year of his contract, and apparently the Cowboys have yet to pick up his year 4 option.
Gary O’Hagan, Phillips’ agent, said Thursday the club has not opened any discussions.
Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones does not comment regarding coaches contracts.
Phillips’ contract status came into focus this week when he said at the NFL owners’ meetings that it normally takes four years to determine how good a coach is.
“It takes about four years to get a championship-type team put together,” Phillips said. “We were expected, because of Dallas, to do it in one, maybe two years, and we haven’t done that. I’m disappointed we haven’t, but I think we will.”(DMN)
You can come up with all sorts of scenarios after this season; but, I’m going to take a stab at this and say that this signals a make or break season for Jason Garrett. I mean, we already know that Phillips is probably out after this year win or lose, so really, this is Garrett’s chance to take this offense by the horns and into the Superbowl. This season is his open audition to really cement himself as the next Cowboys Head Coach, another offensive performance like last season and we’ll see someone else in here like Shanahan or Holmgren. This is why Phillips hasn’t seen a contract extension and he won’t, plain and simple. I’d love to see Phillips ride off into the sunset as a Superbowl winning coach, so let’s hope this is the year.
Will Dallas be welcoming Josh McDaniels with an opening day loss?
Word on the street is that the Cowboys are set to kick off their season on the road against the much maligned Denver Broncos. According to DC.com:
Although the NFL has already announced a few games for the 2009 season, including Raiders at Cowboys on Thanksgiving, the full schedule won’t be made public until late April. But according to multiple reports, the Cowboys could be slated to open the season against the Broncos at Invesco Field on Sept. 13.
The Broncos, who haven’t hosted a game on kickoff weekend since 2004, have apparently requested to play in the Mile High City in Week One. If the NFL honors Denver’s preference – and the league does try, when these requests are in reason – the opponent would have to be the Cowboys… (DC.com)
The Question will be whether or not we’ll be facing Jay Cutler or Chris Simms. Either way, if this in fact ends up being our opening game, it should be a good one for us. I like our odds.
