Its been a slow news day for Cowboys Nation, but that doesn’t necessarily mean there’s nothing going on. We are coming up on three weeks until the NFL draft, and the Cowboys are going full speed ahead. The Cowboys will bring in 30 NFL prospects for closer evaluation and private work outs over the next weeks.
Among the visiting players will be Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee, whose stock has climbed since the NFL scouting combine. McGee had a disappointing senior season in part because of shoulder problems.
Southlake Carroll product Chase Daniel, Missouri’s record-setting quarterback, will take part in the “Dallas day” workout for players from the “metropolitan area” on April 10, along with Rice tight end James Casey, who played at Azle.
The Cowboys are also scheduled to meet with safeties Mike Hamlin (Clemson), Louis Delmas (Western Michigan) and Darcel McBath (Texas Tech). The other scheduled visitors are: Western Illinois linebacker Jason Williams, NC State tight end Anthony Hill, Southern Cal wide receiver Patrick Turner, Richmond outside linebacker Lawrence Sidbury, Fresno State quarterback Tom Brandstater, Iowa cornerback Bradley Fletcher and Oregon cornerback Jairus Byrd. During the NFL Combine the Cowboys were busy interviewing wide receivers, and this caused rumors suggesting the Cowboys may be looking to trade or release Owens, thus the interest in interviewing wide receivers. With Owens now departed, there could be something here more than due diligence. Could the Cowboys be targeting a wide receiver, I would say its not out of the realm that a receiver could be added somewhere early in the draft. The Cowboys are already scheduled to visited with the explosive receiver out of Georgia:
One wide receiver who is picking up a nice head of steam at the right time is Georgia’s Mohamed Massaquoi.
According to a source, the Chicago Bears will be working out the Bulldogs receiver in less than a week. Then he heads to Tennessee and Dallas for official visits with the Titans and the Cowboys. And he’s already worked out for the New England Patriots, who have shown such strong interest in the First-Team All-SEC player that they sent their offensive coordinator and wide receiver coach to Georgia’s Pro Day.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound receiver has prototypical size for the NFL and has been drawing a lot of attention from teams since improving or matching all of his Combine numbers during Georgia’s Pro Day. While projecting a fearless attitude about going across the middle to make catches, Massaquoi rang-up 58 catches for 920 yards and scored eight touchdowns during his final year at Georgia. I have a gut feeling Garrett will want another option at wide receiver as a just in case measure.
