There are several news sources in the New York area that are saying the Jets will not be pursuing Miles Austin further. Sounds like the Jets are having a hard time in giving up a 2nd round pick for Austin this year, and this meeting may have just been research for 2010, when Austin could be a free agent of interest.
From the Star-Ledger:
Also, my people are telling me that the Jets just might be simply kicking the tires on Austin with plans to go after him as an unrestricted free agent next offseason. (more)
The NY Daily News takes this a step further and is saying the Jets deal for Austin is “dead”
The Jets’ courtship of Cowboys WR Miles Austin is “dead,” according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
So much for that flirtation.
Evidently, the Jets came to their senses, realizing it would’ve been crazy to part with a second-round pick — the compensation that would’ve been required to land Austin, a restricted free agent.
The restricted signing period lasts until Friday, but as of this moment, the Jets are out of the Austin sweepstakes — if you could call it a sweepstakes. The former Monmouth (N.J.) Cowboys Looking at QB prospects
The Cowboys hosted four quarterbacks at Valley Ranch on Monday as part of Dallas Day, and Texas A&M quarterback Stephen McGee will be in later this week.
Arkansas’ Casey Dick, Missouri’s Chase Daniel, New Mexico State’s Chase Holbrook and Sam Houston State’s Rhett Bomar worked out for Cowboys offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson on Monday. All four played high school football in Dallas-Fort Worth — Dick at Allen, Daniel at Southlake Carroll, Holbrook at L.D. Bell and Bomar at Grand Prairie. (Star-Telegram)
It’s probably a good idea to get some guys in here, maybe use a 2nd day pick for one of these guys, sit him behind Kitna and Romo. Kitna is 36, so eventually the Cowboys will need to look for another QB to backup Romo. If you can groom a young guy, then this will be good down the line.
