Potential Fallout From Indoor Dome Collapse

The tragic events from the indoor dome collapse have already raised questions from OSHA and media investigators. Could the Cowboys and NFL be facing some legal actions and/or fines? OHSA is already looking into the collapse and will investigate any structural violations:

“We’re trying to determine if there were any violations, or determine the cause,” said Elizabeth Todd, spokeswoman for Region 6 of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

OSHA investigators will be interviewing witnesses and looking for identifiable hazards, she said. The procedure is routine and implies no wrongdoing, Todd said. OSHA has six months to finish its investigation. (CNN)

Was the dome poorly engineered?

…the CEO of a company that makes similar buildings says he believes fewer people would have been injured if the Cowboys’ facility had been supported by air rather than a metal frame. (CNN)

Did the Cowboys indoor practice facility go uninspected?

According to investigative arm of the DMN, the facility was not inspected.

Brandon Formby, who covers Irving for The News, is reporting that the Dallas Cowboys failed to have city officials to inspect roof work done last year on its indoor practice facility.

Under Irving’s building code, the Cowboys, as general contractor, were required to notify the city that the re-roofing was completed and ready for inspection.

A team spokesman declined today to answer questions about the work. (DMN)

Wow, not good news at all from any angle. This has been a tragic event, and if anything could have been done better to avoid such an event you can bet all these questions will be raised fiercly considering the toll this has taken on several people working that day. This will probably be a wake up call for other indoor practice facilities, these structures are quite common in the NCAA and NFL, so you can bet other organizations are now doing their due diligence to avoid a similar disaster.
