The fact that Glen Davis is using mixed martial arts as a way to stay in shape is nothing really new… but he's talking about it in the Herald.
“But when I started watching [my girlfriend], and then I started to do it, then I
was like, ‘Oh man, this is crazy. I love this.’ After that it was just
nonstop UFC – who’s fighting, where is the fight, when am I training?
It was just an unbelievable feeling.”
“I kind of felt like, ‘Oh man, basketball is hard,’ but when you’re
training for a fight, you have to go to a whole different level,” Davis
said. “The training is so extreme. I thought I trained hard playing
basketball, but when you’re doing mixed martial arts, you have to train
even harder.”
And it's paying off exactly as he'd hoped.
said. “My game is I’m a big guy. I pound. That’s what I do. So if I
lose a lot of weight, I’m like the average player. I want to stay in my
body frame and my weight, but (be) more conditioned and more toned.”
There's a quote from Doc in that piece that I completely agree with. I'm all for guys doing non-basketball things to get in better shape. Things like MMA teach you different things about your body. It's very useful. It'll help him move a little better… maybe a little quicker. I like this approach.
Another
plus… if anyone wants to get into his face, he can drop them in .5
seconds and apply a rear naked choke before the refs can do anything
about it. I just want guys like Jason Maxiell to keep that in mind.
