This may simply be posturing on both sides… because it often is.
But Mark Murphy is reporting that the NBA's decision to push the deadline for getting Rondo's contract done to Monday night might not help much
Danny Ainge, who said this morning he knew about the extension,
sounded decidedly unmoved about having extra time to hammer out a deal.
“I don’t know if it helps or it doesn’t help,” said the Celtics’ president of basketball operations.
Rondo’s agent, Bill Duffy, initially said via text message, “That would be nice,” when told of the deadline.
But later, after thinking about it, Duffy said, “We’ll see,” when
asked if the extra time would help in a negotiation that appears as
unresolved as ever, with Rondo poised to become a restricted free agent
in a lucrative market next summer.
It's not much of an update, really. It's just a report that pushed the "will the Rondo deal get done" meter to the "unlikely" side of things. I still believe both sides are playing it down and they're not THAT far off.
