We are 11 innings into the Major League Baseball season. Can you believe it? I have never been so excited about a game between the Mariners and A’s. Not even games between the Twins and those teams. Well, maybe the ALDS between the A’s and Twins. But this is second.
The game started at 5AM this morning, local time, over in Tokyo. I think the game was especially entertaining because of the two teams involved. First, you have the Mariners who have made some moves over the offseason, the biggest trading Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero. They made some big moves in previous seasons too, like the move for Justin Smoak, and they Dustin Ackley. They are young and talented, and should make a move to serious contention before too much longer.
Then there’s the A’s. Oh, the A’s. Oakland is my team this year. I am fascinated by how they rebuild their team every year, and never seem too bad. This season, they have sought after in house products Jemile Weeks and stat geek hero Brandon Allen at either end of the lineup, and filled it in the middle with guys they added in exchange for various traded relievers. Seth Smith and Josh Reddick started, after being acquired from Colorado and Boston, respectively, both started, while Colin Cowgill came from Arizona and stepped in off the bench. And Yoenis Cespedes! The Cuban defector. Who knows what he will do. That’s exciting!
In the end, it was Dustin Ackley that was the hero. He drove in the first run of the season, with a solo home run, and he drove in the go ahead, game winning run in the 11th inning. They play again in the wee hours of Thursday morning. I’m so excited. Go baseball.
