Last year, I introduced the world to “Perceived Value” a metric I invented to explore the public perception of how good a player is. Basically, it combines OPS+, which is a basic catchall offensive metric that’s weighted, so as not to go totally bananas. It is paired with a rate of RBI/runners left on base, called “clutch”. It’s obviously a total BS stat, but it’s a good numerical benchmark for the BS standards that less informed fans (and coaches?) hold players to.
So, anyways, you can find the ratings on Google docs here. It’s been a pretty rough season for the first 9 games, so most players aren’t being rated very highly, or have no RBI to give them any sort of rating. At this time, and it should be no surprise, the highest rated hitter on the team is Josh Willingham. His power bat has made a good first impression. Clete Thomas would be near the top, but right now, his rating is “infinity”. So, that’s pretty good.
At the bottom of the list is Ryan Doumit, who has yet to drive in a run, but has stranded 4 runners. The lowest OPS still on the team that hasn’t met with any offensive success is Sean Burroughs. Get them off the team! Rabble rabble rabble.
Hopefully, things will get a little more offensive over the course of the season. It wasn’t until filling in the spread sheet that it came to focus how poor the offense has been this season.
