So, it’s getting to that ugly time of year. Time for baseball teams to start planning for a stretch run, or conversely, planning for he future. This means, of course, that the Twins may look into moving some players. I have said all along that Denard Span is the most tradeable commodity the team has (low cost, talented, can bring a lot in return), but if Justin Morneau is healthy, then he will also be an option for a team looking to upgrade. Jim Bowden even says so, and he has his finger on the pulse of the Twins*.
So anyways, today, I overheard a conversation, lamenting the state of the Twins. One person, who has said some fairly… curious… things in the past, started talking about how the Twins were probably going to start trading away players. “Like who?”, the other person asked. Danny Valencia. Francisco Liriano. Matt Capps. Carl Pavano.
Ok, Liriano, Capps and Pavano are all in their final year of their contracts, and could be useful components for contending teams. It would be a surprise if at least one of those guys wasn’t moved. But Danny Valencia? Really? So the guy that still has several years left under team control AND wasn’t cracking the lineup, or even the roster of one of the worst teams in baseball is going to be traded? For what? For why? To who?
See, if you don’t want a player on your team anymore, why would you expect anyone else to want them? And why would you sell low, if you thought he still provided value? What I am trying to say, ladies and gentlemen, and you, person who may not know how to access the internet, is that when the Twins start making moves, it’s going to hurt. If another team wants a guy on their roster, it’s a good bet that it was someone you enjoyed having on your roster. So, Danny Valencia isn’t getting traded any time soon.
