Was the 4th of July the Biggest Day Ever?

This is the splash screen at Wild.com, internet home for the Minnesota Wild. Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, the top two free agents on the market this summer BOTH agreed to sign with the Wild. The team made 13 year commitments and the hockey world is stunned. Rather than trying to figure out if this puts the Wild in contention for the Stanley Cup (if the Kings can win it, then ‘yes’), most of my conversations on the topic have been about Minnesota sports as a whole. Is this the biggest free agency move in the history of Minnesota sports?

Never mind that Parise signed here. Never mind that Suter signed here. The fact that they BOTH signed in Minnesota is mind boggling. Actually, go ahead and mind that one or the other signed here. When was the last time a player, in any sport, decided to sign in Minnesota during the prime of his career? When was the last HUGE free agent acquisition in Minnesota sports?

After a long conversation on the topic, from the Vikings (Steve Hutchinson?) to the Timberwolves (Joe Smith?!) and the Twins (Chili Davis??!!), we determined that, no, there has NEVER been any day like Independence Day, 2012 for Minnesota sports fans. So now that the Wild have added the top prizes on the market, maybe we can talk about something else in Minnesota for a change.

Winning.
