Look at the Twins rotation as it presently stands: Scott Diamond, Francisco Liriano, Brian Duensing, Cole De Vries, Sam Deduno. The rotation looks like that because there is no talent at the major league level, and there isn’t any help coming from Rochester. The Twins need one thing, and it is major league ready pitching. They don’t want to sink money into a veteran, of course, because the team is still fairly far off. They need someone young, and they need to acquire it via trade.
Well, which Twins are movable for starting pitching? Denard Span? The Nationals were in the market because they were going to send a reliever and a utility infielder. Ben Revere is in the same boat. And how can the Twins trade away Josh Willingham with 2 1/2 more years left on his contract? And how can they trade people with huge contracts (Justin Morneau) away, expecting major league ready talent? Add to that that Terry Ryan is one of the least active players in baseball at the deadline, and you come up with the solution to the equation:
The Twins aren’t going to do much this month, no matter what situation they find themselves in.
