The Twins are likely out of the race and will be making a deal at some point over the next couple of days. I recently saw a rumor that the Angels might be interested in Francisco Liriano. After seeing that, I say… go for it. The Twins, since 2000, have had an enormous amount of success with their deals with west coast teams. This can’t possibly be a coincidence! Take a look at these facts:
Seattle: 2004: Purchase Terry Mulholland. 2008, Acquire RA Dickey for Minor League Jair Fernandez
San Francisco: 2003: Acquire Joe Nathan, Francisco Liriano and Boof Bonser for AJ Pierzynski
Oakland: 2009: Acquire Orlando Cabrera for Tyler Ladendorf
Los Angeles Dodgers: Nothing!
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, California: 2010 Acquire Brian Fuentes for Loek Van Mil. 2005: Acquire Alexi Casilla for JC Romero
San Diego: 2002 Acquire Jason Bartlett for Brian Buchanan
I didn’t include the two trades that were basically inconsequential (Dustan Mohr to San Francisco and Todd Sears to San Diego), but that is a great deal of success! No prospect dealt away has ever made it to the major leagues, and only two players in return (those acquired for Mohr and Sears) have failed to make it. So, go ahead and deal Liriano to the Angels. I think we can win this thing.
