According to a whole slew of reports, the first I heard were from Yahoo!, the Big Ten is deep in talks with Rutgers and Maryland to join as the 13th and 14th members. If this happens, it will transparently be for money, moving the Big Ten’s footprint into New York City, Baltimore and Washington. This really doesn’t have much to do with football or basketball, or really any other skill (Rutgers is bad at basketball, Maryland is bad at football). So instead, here are some bizarre thoughts on the subject.
– Minnesota vs. Rutgers.
– Maryland vs Utah in the Rose Bowl
– Nebraska vs Rutgers in the Big Ten Championship Game
– Maryland’s absolutely ridiculous uniforms vs Penn State and their tradition
– Purdue has’t even played Nebraska yet, not in football.
– Rutgers could play Syracuse in the Big Ten-ACC Challenge. Maryland could play Notre Dame
– States that would border the hypothetical Big Ten: Colorado, Wyoming, Delaware, Virginia.
– Somehow, the Big Ten would, overall, get worse at football, may actually get some credit as a basketball conference.
– Northwestern would finally have a rival for nerdiest school in the Big Ten
– Indiana would still be the dumbest. Wisconsin the drunkest.
Right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if it happens, especially after the last couple of years. I don’t think it will because it is cost prohibitive, but I’ve been wrong for almost everything related to the whole conference realignment thing.
