Francisco Liriano actually had a contract in hand fairly quickly, considering how long it took for so many former Twins to find work. Kyle Lohse and Matt Capps remain unemployed, while Kevin Slowey and Delmon Young signed only this week.
Liriano’s contract with the Pirates, however, was shelved briefly, when Liriano developed a new injury. The contract was agreed upon again after some discussion, but now we have confirmation on what happened. He fell in the bathroom.
Now, I know that the bathroom can be a dangerous place, especially if you aren’t careful. One time when I was a child in an unfamiliar bathroom, I tripped and fell into a bathtub. I hit my head pretty hard, but didn’t break any bones.
The link I had a couple paragraphs ago suggested a possibility of Liriano slipping on a wet floor or tripping over a bathmat, but a bathtub out of place is always a possibility, as it was for me. Another possibility is a surprise in the toilet, followed by a recoil in horror. He lives in the Dominican Republic. What’s stopping a lizard or spider or Alexi Casilla camping out in there?
But I think the wet floor idea is probably the best. I don’t think it was a shower, though, which would be the obvious assumption. Having seen Liriano on the mound lately, let’s just say I think it’s a pretty good bet that he “missed the strike zone” in the bathroom too.
