Heading into February and March, people begin asking questions about who is and is not in the Big Dance. Who are the best teams in the land? Who will make it off of the bubble and into the Tournament? One thing that many people like to play is the “mystery team” game, in which a team’s resume is posted, and then people try to first say whether or not the team is in the tournament based on that resume, followed by their guess as to who the team is. So let’s play! Here is the mystery resume:
Record: 17-6
RPI rank: 10
SOS Rank: 3
Non conference RPI: 11
Non conference SOS: 2
Wins vs RPI top 50: 3
Losses vs RPI 100+: 0
In the business, people would call this team a sure fire “in”. Of course, the team is 17-6 which will hurt their seed a bit. Joe Lunardi has them as a 5 seed, but a case could be made for higher based on the factors not tied to straight record.
In case you haven’t figured it out, the team is Minnesota. Their only sin, as far as I can tell, has been playing in the toughest conference in the world, something that is apparently unforgivable in the minds far to many around here. Remember, this is a team that was unranked at the beginning of the season, and people want to call the squad a disappointment.
