A tangible look at success

Baltimore 355Every year, I go catch the Twins on my birthday. It’s nice, because I am an April baby, so the game is early enough in the season that you don’t have any preconceived notions about how good or bad the team is. It’s fresh and there is hope. I’ve been doing this since 2007, and would have done so since 2006 but a trip to Toronto was not possible.

This season, I will be attending a game at the same stadium as last year. This is only the second time this has happened. I went to the Metrodome twice, Chicago (for a game that was postponed) Los Angeles, New York and Baltimore. This year, the game is once again in Baltimore.

Last season, the game was the season opener and the 20th anniversary of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Orioles have been pretty awful for about 13 years, and the two teams, the Twins and O’s, looked equally matched. This wasn’t a compliment to either team. My friend Kyle and I ended up with pretty good seats, not far from right behind home plate. The tickets were 150 bucks apiece. Affordable, and a good price for a game that was ultimately a treat for myself and Kyle.

Last year, the Orioles went on a tear. They had their best season since Tony Tarasco roamed the outfield, and managed to sneak into the playoffs, winning a one game playoff against the Rangers before taking on the Yankees in the ALDS, losing in a full 5 game series.

So now the Orioles and their long suffering fans can look forward to the season. In my experience, they are enthusiastic. This time the tickets are only 105 bucks… but they are in the upper deck down the 3rd base line. The seats that we had on opening day last year? This year, they are 1000 bucks on third party websites. People are willing to pay through the nose to watch their products. It pays to win.
