On the Menu: Beef, black eyed peas and rice

I obviously meant to post this a couple of days ago, like I said I would on the radio show. It’s hard to say exactly what this was. Is it a side dish? Is it a soup? Is it chili? I’m not sure. IT was best served with crackers, and I had it with bread as well, so I guess that is reminiscent of stew.

It wasn’t thin or brothy, but it didn’t form up like a casserole. It had jalapenos, onions and salsa, so it was rather spicy, which brings me back to chili. But then there were no beans, just the black eyed peas and rice. That didn’t belong. And they both soaked in all the liquid that was there. And it took less than a half hour to make, unlike chili or stew.

Where does that leave us, then? Calling it beef, black eyed peas and rice. It was definitely hot, and it was filling thanks in large part to the beef and other proteins in it. It was good as a meal and quite flavorful. Whatever it was.
