Only Six Players Remain From Previous Regimes

The Cowboys will field one of the youngest offensive lines in 2014 with the addition of Zack Martin, and as a whole, Jason Garrett has gotten the team younger by several personnel moves since he was named the Head Coach in 2011.

After Dave Campo tallied (3) consecutive 5-11 seasons, Jerry Jones hired Bill Parcells in 2003 to turn the team around, and with that I’ll take a look at the 6 drafted players that remain on Garrett’s roster, now in 2014.

Class of 2003 (Parcells)

  • 3rd round: Jason Witten

Class of 2007 (Phillips)

  • 1st round: Anthony Spencer
  • 4th round: Doug Free

Class of 2008 (Phillips)

  • 5th round: Orlando Scandrick

Class of 2010 (Phillips)

  • 1st round: Dez Bryant
  • 2nd round: Sean Lee

These players make up about 11% of the starting 53-man roster, and this number could drop if Spencer never plays a down this year. I’m very skeptical on Spencer playing this year.

Witten is the lone drafted player left from the Parcells era and a real testament of what sort of player the Cowboys stole in the 3rd round of that 2003 draft. There’s no doubt Witten will be a Hall of Fame shoe-in once he becomes eligible.

Of these 6 players, all are starters.

Witten and Bryant are franchise caliber players, Lee could be in that conversation if it were not for the injuries; however, he’s definitely a key player on defense.

Dez Bryant will be the only player from the past regimes that will cash in on a huge contract.

Here are the Top 5 highest paid WRs in the league

  1. Calvin Johnson
  2. Larry Fitzgerald
  3. Percy Harvin
  4. Mike Wallace
  5. Dwayne Bowe

Dez is going to demand some serious ca$h. He’s arguably in the top 2-3 in this list and he’s definitely better than Harvin, Wallace and Bowe.

The Cowboys need to do a better job of hitting on the players they draft and keep them. If this current offseason is any indication of the Cowboys taking a truly wholesale approach to their roster moves and draft moves, then they’ll be on an upward tick.
