The Cowboys will kickoff training camp on July 24, 2014, and they’ll be taking one of the league’s youngest rosters in the process. The Cowboys have been younger since Jason Garrett has taken over and this offseason has seen the Cowboys make moves that continue to get the roster younger. DeMarcus Ware and Jason Hatcher were players in their 30s that are no longer on the team, and they have been replaced with players in their 20s.

Coupled with some players that are no longer with the team and with the latest infusion of rookies, the Cowboys are now sitting with a 90-man roster average of 24.8

The Cowboys also got younger in the NFL experience category, they currently have an average of 4.3 years NFL experience. This number is interesting because it further illustrates how much the roster has churned since Garrett has taken over and if you haven’t shown something in 3 years, you’ll likely be outta here after finishing your 4-year rookie contract.

Will McClay has also been an instrumental piece in keeping the Cowboys younger as well. We saw this last year when the Cowboys opted to bring in the younger, lesser-name guys in off the street instead of some of the older familiar guys that were available. I think we’ll continue to see more of the same, which is why the Cowboys are going to see what they have in-house for the Mike linebacker position.

There are only 8 players that are 30 years old and up:

  • Tony Romo, QB (34)
  • L.P. Ladouceur, LS (33)
  • Jason Witten, TE (32)
  • Kyle Orton, QB (31)
  • Doug Free, OT (30)
  • Jeremy Mincey, DE (30)
  • Anthony Spencer, DE (30)
  • Brandon Weeden, QB (30)

This number will fluctuate slightly up or down once we get to the 53-man roster and the 8-man practice squad. But even so, the Cowboys will be one of the league’s youngest team’s for the 2014 season, likely younger than last year’s team.

Do you like how the Cowboys have been revamping the roster the past few years?
