Has Tony Romo Become Drew Bledsoe?

It’s funny how things workout once the regular season begins, this whole time most of us were extremely worried about the defense and some of us were excited about the Sam signing, that’s how bad we thought the defense was, and perhaps the jury is still out. Fast forward to this past Sunday and we’re talking about Tony Romo… again.

There’s no doubt that Romo lost this game, and he’s had more of his share of these types of performances, but what makes this one scary is the potential for Romo being on the downside of his career – officially. We’ve seen some quarterbacks remain at the top of their game in their mid-to-late 30s; Montana; Manning; and Brady come to mind. But then we have the ones that have that steady downward spiral of their career and I think this past Sunday’s game could be a precursor of Romo’s downward spiral.

You’ll see plenty of excuses and hope from some. Yes, he didn’t get as much practice time or preseason action as one may have wanted, but the fact remains that Romo is coming off his second consecutive back surgery and his age is becoming a factor. He looked like an aging, struggling quarterback that was desperate to make a play. Take that deep bomb to Dwayne Harris for instance; that was a straight up chuck it and hope for the best – it was sad. Luckily Harris came down with the ball, but that was some desperation like I’ve never seen, especially against a 49ers defense that was severely shorthanded and banged up.

Romo’s Career Coming Full Circle?

Take this into account; In 2006, Drew Bledsoe was in his 2nd season as the Cowboys QB, and he had a poor passing stats at the time. He had 7 TDs and 8 INTs before Parcells pulled the plug on him and gave the reigns to Tony Romo. Parcells knew if a QB change did not happen, then the season would be lost. Interestingly enough, Bledsoe was 34 years old at the time, which also happens to be the age Romo is this season. Unlike the 2006 season, this 2014 roster does not have it’s own up and coming Romo-type player on the team. Romo has become the guy he replaced in 2006.

Whisenhunt Undefeated Against Cowboys

If Romo has another bad game against the Tennessee Titans on the road, then we’re going to be in trouble, and the season could start off without a win and spiral into clinching the overall #1 pick in the 2015 draft. The Titans will be a tough game. Ken Whisenhunt is there now and revamped the culture, so don’t expect them to rollover. As a Head Coach, Whisenhunt is a perfect 3-0 against the Cowboys, so he has a formula at attacking Garrett’s offense and our defense. The Cowboys may have to rely on the defense to keep the Cowboys in the game, how crazy is that?

The Cowboys may not see any relief in the first part of the schedule until they play the Rams in week 3, and somehow I bet that will be one of those unnecessarily close games. Watch.
