It seems like we have been saying the Cowboys season is over the last few weeks. We got a tease last week against a bad Dolphins team, so it looks like the optimism was over-estimated. The Panthers made the Cowboys look like a losing team that their current 3-8 indicates.
The 33-14 trouncing was full of ugly play, including two pick sixes, and more bad defense. For all intents and purposes, the 2015 season is over for the Cowboys.
Tony Romo re-injured the collarbone and even though the initial x-ray was inconclusive, Romo suggested the injury felt like the first time he broke his clavicle, so he’s likely done for the year.
If the season ended today, the Cowboys would own the #4 overall pick in the NFL Draft, and they better get themselves a quarterback. I said in my Twitter that the Cowboys now have a legitimate shot at going 3-13 for the year. The reason? History.
With backups in the game, the Cowboys lost 7 consecutive games between Brandon Weeden and Matt Cassel. Let’s be real, the Cowboys are not going to “run” the table and win 5 consecutive games and win the NFC East, throw that out the window and get real already — the season is done.
The Cowboys need to be in evaluation mode and see what the plan is for quarterback moving forward. Romo won’t retire and he won’t give up the starting gig; however, with Romo likely out for the year, the Cowboys need to see what they have in Cassel and Kellen Moore.
The Cowboys’ final games are absolutely brutal:
Week 13: @ Washington Redskins; 7:30pm (MNF)** 12/7
Week 14: @ Green Bay Packers; 3:25pm (FOX) 12/13
Week 15: New York Jets; 7:25pm (NFLNetwork)** 12/19
Week 16: @ Buffalo Bills; 12pm (FOX) 12/27
Week 17: Washington Redskins; 12pm (FOX) 1/3
Do you see any wins in there? I don’t, not one single win. So, let’s see what Moore can do. We absolutely need to know where we’re at for the 2016 season at QB. Romo will be back, but it’s time to get his eventual replacement on the team, no more messing around with the position or we can expect more excruciating seasons like this year and no fan wants that.
Last offseason the Cowboys interviewed and met several QBs for the 2015 draft. In an article I wrote after the draft I suggested this was an exercise for what they’ll need to do for the 2016 draft and that time has finally arrived.
Outside of QB, the Cowboys have a lot of work to do on this roster. The defense is still bad, and the transition from the 3-4 to 4-3 has been hugely disappointing with little results of improving from their previous scheme, possibly worst off truthfully.
I’m not sure I like what we’re doing at the defensive tackle position, whether it’s the scheme or the players, the middle is not getting any pressure to the QB. The pass rush is anemic and in need of star pass rusher, we don’t have that player right now. We have some decent rotational players, but those “waves” of pressure simply aren’t there and it’s hurting us bad.
What’s your honest thought on the Cowboys outlook and the QB position? Is it time to draft a QB once and for all?
